It was first mined in Afghanistan several thousand years ago, and although other geographical sources exist, the Afghan mountains still yield some of the finest specimens.

History: The stone in this piece has been prized since deepest antiquity, with the ancient Egyptians being the most famous people to work it into jewelry, sacred regalia for the pharaohs, rings, scarab carvings, mosaics, and even boxes! In powdered form, lapis lazuli was also used by Egyptian nobility as an eyeshadow paired with black kohl to outline the eyes.
